Runes can also be used in specific Horadric Cube recipes. For D2R Items example, you can use the Ral rune alongside a damaged piece of equipment to fix it. This is a great option when you're low on gold and cannot afford repairs from a vendor. Runes can also be combined with each other in the Horadric Cube; this is often referred to as "cubing up" and is a typical method to gain access to the next rune level without needing to seek it out within the wilderness. For example, if you own three El runes but need the Eld Rune you can put the three El runes in the cube and press the transmute key. Out will come an Eld rune. The quest to find the Hellforge located in Act 4 will always drop some runes, and it is usually used as a payment to speed up the acts. The Countess's house, which is located in the at the bottom of the Forgotten Tower in Act 1's Black Marsh, is another great source of runes.Because runs have a particular limit of rarity, which ranges from most frequent (El) through to the most rare (Zod) typically, they're utilized as an economic tool in Diablo 2. El through Lem are generally considered to be low runes, Pul up to Gul are typically considered mid runes, and Vex to Zod are generally considered high runes. If you find middle or high runes while on your travels, be sure not to sell these runes in a hurry!

It is first necessary to locate the appropriate runes in order to create the runeword, and then you'll need to locate the weapon or armor, or shield that can accept the runeword. The item has to have the precise number of open sockets for the word to function, and the runes need to be placed inside the socketed object in the correct order. The item must also be plain (white); magic (blue), rare (yellow) or unique (gold), or set (green) items with the correct amount of sockets will not work for D2R ladder items buy runewords.
